0:00 Pamala Yeah. You know, you get to talk to each other every day. Is this a privilege? I don't even get to see anybody else every day.
0:07 Eva But I'm like, welcome to you know, too much a bite sized trip down the rabbit hole with people who know way too much about one very specific thing. I'm Eva McCloskey.
0:17 Pamala And I'm Pamala Buzick Kim. Let's get to know too much.
0:22 Eva What a season.
0:25 Pamala Yeah, dude, I mean, so good. Congrats. Congrats on the team. Yeah, right to us. I can't believe we got 24 episodes. And they're all so special. I love them all so much.
0:43 Eva Yeah, it was an adventure getting everyone out, but we did.
0:48 Pamala It was crazy. We did it. First timer as well. Sort of. I mean, I did podcast back in 2005, but that was the dinosaur ages. Yeah. All right. So this we're going to we're going to reflect on season one.
1:01 Eva Yes we are. But we're that's what we're here for because we hopped.
1:05 Pamala Yeah I have some questions for you. I would assume you have some questions for me.
1:13 Eva I do.
1:14 Pamala Which guest obsession did you secretly get sucked into after we stopped recording? Exact same list of questions.
1:27 Eva I think, you know, the our, Lindsay episode about microplastics was the one that I did the most, like googling and shopping after.
1:39 Pamala Oh, okay.
1:41 Eva I watched some Dick Van Dyke after we did our Danny episode.
1:45 Pamala Oh, yeah.
1:46 Eva That's the only episode that I like. Went to some new content for now. I watched some bee, some bee content too.
1:55 Pamala Yeah, that was mine. I had to like.
1:57 Eva Oh yeah, I was going to. So same same question to you.
2:00 Pamala Yeah, the bees, the like the bee stuff was like fascinating to me. I, I don't I didn't like necessarily go through like Dina's recommendations of films and documentaries, but I was really interesting in the hierarchy and female sort of like female bee situation because I just did not know that it was all female bees. I thought it was just like the one working, you know, the, the queen bee and then everything else was like a mix of the gender.
2:35 Pamala But like, that was crazy. So cool. Yeah.
2:40 Eva So my turn. Was there a moment a guest went so deep that we lost the thread the most? I think it's happened more than once. Which which conversation led us the furthest away from the topic at hand? Maybe that's my actual.
3:03 Pamala Kind of want to say, like your answers, because, yes, he's had some elements, you know, I mean, like the, the hypnotist for his, like, gag reflex because he does competitive eating with competitive cycling. And so I feel like there was just so many doors in that conversation that, yeah, like, I know we were talking about those things combined, but then I was like, I needed to know so much more about the competitive cycling.
3:31 Pamala I needed to know so much more about the competitive eating, yet alone blowing my mind that those things got put together together.
3:38 Eva Yeah. Or even just like the baseline understanding that this is a thing that exists. Yeah, not just that. We didn't know much about it yet. Right? Yeah, because I didn't know that it was a thing.
3:52 Pamala Yeah. I had no idea like that. Like broke my mind. I was like, yeah, I'm sorry. I'm so it was crazy because then also further down the line, we had Jelena, who we were talking about California rattlesnakes, but it sort of came about because she's on her horse a lot and does long distance competitive horse riding like competition.
4:18 Eva Marathoning I know. Yeah. So fascinating.
4:21 Pamala And I was so desperate to want to ask her about it. But I was like, okay, sticks around next to the rattlesnakes.
4:27 Eva Yes, exactly. Focus. Put on the focus pants. Pamala.
4:35 Pamala Well, I do want to just say, based on the first question, going down the rabbit hole afterwards is. And I know you said that you've changed like some of your materials from the microplastics. I will say, I don't think I've bought a single piece of new clothing since talking to Amanda.
4:53 Eva Ooh, yeah. That's interesting because.
4:58 Pamala Because she was talking to us so much about, like, the differences between use versus upcycle versus vintage and she made it sort of more accessible, but then also just really kind of stuck with me to always look there first. Yeah. Like I always sort of knew like I don't need like no one needs really new clothes per se.
5:21 Pamala And so I already kind of knew that. And I don't really shop that often anymore, but I was like, you know what? Let me go down this rabbit hole of, like, actually like Poshmark and all of these different things and kind of see what's going on in that world. And so now I literally have not bought a single new item since.
5:39 Eva That's so nice. Yeah. It's nice, a nice reminder of resale world. Yes. Right.
5:45 Pamala Yes. Oh, stead of buying now. Yeah, absolutely.
5:50 Eva So if you could bring back anyone who we already interviewed for this season for a part two, who would that be and why?
6:01 Pamala Oh my God, Wendy Jo. Hands down Wendy Jo, episode number one. Such a kick off launch to the podcast. Yeah, because she was so and like, so passionate and so historical and clear about her story. But also she's an incredible storyteller too. So I would just love to hear. I mean I would hear another gymnastics story from her.
6:25 Pamala Yes. But I would also listen to anything else that she's obsessed with because she truly, truly is that obsessive and because she care so much. Yes. And so I, Wendy Jo hands down. And also our video back then was so not good. Yeah. I kind of want to redo on her visuals.
6:46 Eva Totally. We could do maybe for season two, we can watch some gymnastics with her while we record. Right. We have the technology for that. That would be amazing. So the commentary from Wendy Jo during an event. I mean.
7:05 Pamala Right, exactly. Well, during the Olympics. So she did season three.
7:08 Eva Yeah, definitely. I want to bring back. But yeah. Nick and do like an on the on the River Bank episode whilst we do some fly fishing. I think that would be Nick's episode was the most. The closest I got I think to to wanting to, like, actually take up one of the interests that we got down the rabbit hole of because the flies were so beautiful.
7:39 Pamala They were I mean, I did dream of just being on a river and listening to the sound of a river and just, you know, cutting off digital life. Yeah. And enjoying that, that that environment. For sure. Yeah. Yeah. We'll have to have a, you know too much trip.
7:58 Eva On the road.
8:00 Pamala Ten lucky winners.
8:01 Eva Yes. We could do it.
8:04 Pamala Yeah. So we have a character named Luddie. Yes. Which we haven't really talked about a lot. And we kind of just like, constantly refer to Luddie in our visuals on our website internally. The team, we.
8:20 Eva We talk about him a lot. We don't maybe we don't talk. We do publicly a lot, but we don't talk about them publicly.
8:26 Pamala So I wanted to like, just have this minute and just be like, who? Who's Luddie? Why? Why do you and I love Luddie so much? And then I have a third question, but I think I'm gonna start there.
8:40 Eva I love Luddie so much because of there. Cute. Curious. Weird sweetness. And their clever name.
8:54 Pamala Yeah.
8:55 Eva Because I don't know if it's obvious, but Luddie's. Based on the word Luddite. And even in your brilliant creation of this character as our mascot, I got a deeper understanding of the word Luddite, which is always interesting to me. Yeah.
9:15 Pamala Yeah. It's like, that's I, I sometimes joke with my husband that he's a Luddite. It's usually used as like a negative term. Right. And then I read this, a credible Jacobin article. I believe it was from there, about Luddites. And it was actually like a movement and not about being resistance to or resistance to evolution, or things, you know, tech, kind of evolving tech.
9:42 Pamala Exactly. It's not a resistance that it's actually just an understanding of how to maintain craft and understand where that evolution should be and where it shouldn't be, and managing and maintaining human connection and human craft. And just not like, you know, just not making it this huge factory where it has no heart or soul or touch, of humanity to things.
10:13 Pamala So that's sort of where I felt for me, what we're sort of doing what, you know, too much also. I feel like we, we, you know, we have incredibly smart people on this earth, but they're not always necessarily an academic in that particular space, are not always necessarily a thought leader or it's not always necessarily their job.
10:32 Eva That doesn't mean that they don't. Yeah.
10:34 Pamala Totally. It doesn't mean that they're any less, you know, obsessive or less, knowledgeable and.
10:42 Eva Credible little.
10:43 Pamala Bits. Totally. Exactly. Agreed. And I think it's just this moment where we all have these things that we love to deep dive into. And chat about, but we think, oh, no one wants to hear about this, this is stupid or this is dumb. But I think that's actually, like, fascinating and interesting and so joyful. So that's.
11:02 Eva Agreed.
11:03 Pamala Yeah. Like that, Luddie. Our mascot. Like, that's the representation of what they give. Give to the world and represent for us.
11:10 Eva Yeah. And they have a brain on their carbon belly. It's so cute.
11:17 Pamala Yeah, I love it. It's so cute. I really want an animated series of Luddie. Yes, but more ambitions, of course. So my question now that we have explained Luddie. Yeah. More publicly. Which episode do you think would be Luddie's favorite.
11:36 Eva Oh my gosh.
11:39 Pamala Yeah. That's I got a good question that.
11:40 Eva You didn't and she is. Yeah. What would Luddie's favorite to be. I think it depends on the mood.
11:50 Pamala But I.
11:52 Eva I, I feel like it might be a tie between coffee and beer. So they were both such different, fun episodes and different, really expert, deep, expert level guests. I think that that Luddie would gravitate to both of those beverage focused yet episode amazing.
12:18 Pamala Yeah. Yeah, those are great. What would you say? I would say Jordana's Eurovision. Yes. As you get to experience and act, and live and breathe, all of those people who are doing those incredible, insane performances.
12:36 Eva Yes.
12:38 Pamala And then I would say, Shawnté's pooping in the woods because it's such, you know, we don't talk about those things, you know, sort of like, but like it. Yeah, it's like an actual thing. It's important. And it's like, it is relative to keeping the environment clean, keeping yourself safe, but also just part of bodily function.
13:02 Pamala And it's not embarrassing. It's just like part of.
13:05 Eva Part of being.
13:06 Pamala Able to enjoy the outdoors.
13:08 Eva Yeah. And wag bag.
13:11 Pamala Okay. One of the.
13:11 Eva One of.
13:12 Pamala The like
13:13 Eva More hilarious new terms that I learned this season right. Thank you. Yeah. So we've been talking.
13:22 Pamala In the same way. I back to.
13:24 Eva A lot about our let's, talk about our viewers and our listeners for a moment. Do you have any favorite messages from listeners?
13:38 Pamala I do, I've gotten, like, some really cute text messages from folks that weren't necessarily, there at the beginning. Yeah. It took a moment for them to get a chance to listen, but then every time that they did, they would deep dive into like, four episodes in a row. Yes. I think that was like the biggest message.
14:00 Pamala And they were like, oh my gosh, I finally got a chance to listen. And now I'm on like four, four deep.
14:07 Eva Yes.
14:09 Pamala I think those are.
14:10 Eva My.
14:10 Pamala Favorites. Yeah. Yeah. I asked them, I said, you know, did you like, which ones did you listen to? Did you do them in a row? Did you start from the beginning and they were like, no, no. Just picked a random.
14:21 Eva One man to light.
14:22 Pamala And then just kept picking another one that I wanted to hear about, you know. Yeah. So I thought that was really joyful about you.
14:29 Eva Yeah. My friend Dana texted me to say that he was inspired by Nick's fly tying episode to read, The Old Man and the Sea. So I just thought that that was something really special. Dana's a special, artful, introspective guy, but I loved that. Our goofy, kind of silly podcast was inspo. To go back to some, Hemingway was that's a that is special.
15:01 Eva Can't do that at me. Oh.
15:02 Pamala Okay. Yeah.
15:04 Eva Shout out to.
15:05 Pamala Hemingway. Yeah. I was like, oh, eight times. Is Hemingway come up anymore?
15:09 Eva Yeah, exactly.
15:11 Pamala Brutal. I loved that. That was really cool. I think another like, public moment that was, like, super exciting was when Dick Van Dyke's account. Yes. Our Dick Van Dyke Show episode. It was like epic.
15:26 Eva Yes. Yeah. That was pretty special. That was a special message to for sure.
15:31 Pamala For sure. Yeah. Yeah. Guys still kickin? Still doing it. Crazy for him? Yeah. Oh my gosh. That was a good question with us. Yeah. I didn't have that one.
15:44 Eva Yeah. Good good good good good.
15:47 Pamala This is hard because I couldn't answer this for myself, which is so silly.
15:50 Eva I'll try.
15:53 Pamala What would you want to be interviewed about for yourself?
15:57 Eva Oh, that was going to be. My next question was, if we were guests, what would my episode be? What would you say my episode would be? And vice versa. But I haven't thought so.
16:06 Pamala I think I think you have like, a lot of, like, different things that you're, you're involved in and do. Yeah. And I know what I enjoy hearing more about. Like, I love hearing about your chess mom stuff. Like you're so. It's weird. You know, your your kid is a kid. Yeah. And this is a whole realm. And world into itself of going to chess tournaments and travel and all that kind of stuff.
16:31 Pamala And the circuit, there's a circuit that's like, And so I really kind of want to, like, ask you more about how it works, the set up, the drama, the politics. And I get to hear a lot of it because we get to talk to each other every day. Get to get. Which is.
16:49 Eva Welcome.
16:50 Pamala Yeah. You know, we get to talk to each other every day. Is is is a privilege. I don't even get to talk to anybody else every day except for me and my God. So. But I think it's a fascinating world to talk about if you're not part of it. Yeah. So I would want to, like, go into your chess mom.
17:07 Pamala And even though I know there's, like, 500 other things to ask you about.
17:11 Eva Yes. No, that that is, there's an unending content from it. There's those trips, for sure.
17:22 Pamala I feel like there's a Best in Show documentary, one that needs to be done 100%. Don't know why it hasn't been done yet.
17:31 Pamala I do. We can.
17:32 Eva We could talk about their high lows. So low. Yes. Their loss and manga. The the parts of you know too much. They should have their own episode. They kind of do. They feature in many episodes.
17:47 Pamala Yeah. Which whether we want to or not. Yeah. Really? Seriously. Which is why it was so great to also hear about Nicole Cramer. She seems
17:56 Eva So.
17:56 Pamala Good with her, though.
17:57 Eva That was so good with,
17:59 Pamala Good the dog.
18:00 Eva Ruthie and Lisa. Those are special, special girls. Adventure girls. I from you, I would like to hear more about all of the fascinating work that happens around Stay in LA. I don't think enough people know about that. And it is fascinating. And as thankless as that work is, I think there's a lot of really interesting, things to learn in the in the more mundane.
18:32 Pamala Yeah. As it. I appreciate that. Thank you. Yeah. It's, for those of you who are not aware, Stay in LA is a grassroots volunteer organization that I helped co-found right after the Palisades and Altadena fires, to high, trying to help the city maintain and keep, production. So film, TV, commercial, etc., production to stay in Los Angeles, we've had over, 45% drop since before Covid.
18:58 Pamala And the strikes that, the the the strike, the writer strikes and the actor strikes. So it's then, you know, production is the third largest industry. Yeah, in our city. So, yeah, there's a lot of people who are suddenly out of work. So, yeah, we try to do our best on a variety of fronts, especially always volunteer some nights and weekends.
19:21 Pamala But yeah, I mean, I'm happy to talk about it. It's it's, it's dire and bleak. But it's amazing, like. Yeah. Which is amazing and good. Yeah. It is people power for sure. Yes. I think it's kind of the, the only other question I had was like and we talked about this a little bit before like you know, do we want to say anything about season two.
19:49 Pamala I was just going to say that I'm super excited. We've this time we've picked some themes. Find them on our website at youknowtoomuch.media. And so there's some themes that are a little bit clearer so that we think, like, have some, you know, just some stuff we were talking about and thinking about and reflecting on from this season.

It's going to be very exciting. I can't wait.
20:41 Eva Yes.
